Measurement and Control Solutions for the Petrochemical and Chemical Industries
The production processes in the petrochemical and chemical industries involve high temperatures, high pressures, corrosive media, and explosive substances. These conditions impose stringent requirements on the explosion-proof compliance, material compatibility, and long-term stability of measurement and control instruments. As a leading supplier of measurement and automation technology, JUMO provides comprehensive solutions for the petrochemical and chemical sectors, covering explosion-proof selection, pressure, temperature, flow, level measurement, wastewater treatment, and engineering services. **[ATEX Explosion-Proof Selection]** In accordance with EU Directive 2014/34/EU and the IECEx system, explosive atmospheres are classified into potential zones: Gas Zones 0 (explosive gas atmosphere present continuously or for long periods), 1 (likely to occur during normal operation), and 2 (unlikely to occur during normal operation, and if it does, only for a short duration). Dust Zones 20, 21, and 22 correspond to these categories. Equipment protection types include Ex d (flameproof enclosure), Ex p (pressurized enclosure), Ex q (powder filling), Ex o (oil immersion), Ex e (increased safety), Ex ia/ib/ic (intrinsic safety), Ex n (non-sparking), Ex ma/mb/mc (encapsulated), and Ex t (protected by enclosures). Equipment protection levels Ga/Gb/Gc (gas) and Da/Db/Dc (dust) correspond to zone classifications. Regarding explosion groups: Group I covers mine methane; Group II covers explosive gas atmospheres, subdivided into IIA, IIB, and IIC; Group III covers dust atmospheres, subdivided into IIIA (combustible fibers), IIIB (non-conductive dust), and IIIC (conductive dust). Temperature classes T1 through T6 correspond to maximum surface temperatures of 450/300/200/135/100/85°C, which must remain below the ignition temperature range of combustible materials. **[Pressure Measurement]** JUMO has over 30 years of experience in pressure measurement. Explosion-proof RTDs and thermocouples carry ATEX/IECEx certifications. Sensor sheaths come into direct contact with media subject to high wear, stress corrosion, high flow rates, and extreme temperatures. Material options and maximum operating temperatures include: 304/316/316L/316Ti/321 Stainless Steel 700~800°C, 347H 850°C, 310S and GH3030/GH3039 plus Inconel 600/Incoloy 800 1100°C, 1.4749/1.4841 1150°C, Monel alloy 600°C, Hastelloy 700°C, KANTHAL alloy 1250°C, Ceramic KER 610/710 1300/1600°C, Titanium and Tantalum 400°C, PTFE 200°C, Silicon Carbide 1700°C, and Duplex Steel 2205 315°C. Sheath structural dimensions are frequency-checked per ASME PTC 19.3 TW-2010. Deep-hole drilling follows VDI 3210 standards, with X-ray testing on both sides of the inner bore to control concentricity. Welded sheaths undergo 100% PT inspection for surface cracks; pressure-bearing sheaths also undergo RT inspection for internal defects. Hydrostatic test pressure for pressure-bearing sheath tubes is typically 60~500bar (100 times the flange rated pressure), applied for 3~15 minutes. Dial-type bimetallic thermometers and electrical contact bimetallic thermometers use thermal expansion of bimetallic spiral strips to drive pointers. Electrical contact types activate relays via contact closure/opening to achieve automatic control and alarms. Surface-mounted RTDs/thermocouples include cable-connected types (Datasheet 902550, -50~+400°C, Pt100/Pt500/Pt1000) for low heat dissipation surfaces (curved and flat); plate structures (901110/20) for reactor surface temperature measurement (-50~600°C); and knife-edge structures (901120/20) for high-performance boiler tube temperature measurement (0~800°C), with optional insulation covers. Rigid multi-point temperature measurement isolates process media from sensing elements using outer protective tubes, providing temperature indication at different intervals within the same cross-section. Various alloy steel materials suit different conditions, with optional secondary sealing chambers to detect initial pressure boundary failures. Rigid structures offer superior protection under turbulent flow conditions; conductive module solutions allow individual sensor replacement during operation. Spring-loaded options include bimetal spring loading (contacting inner wall upon thermal expansion, max 538°C), high-temperature spring loading (max rated temp 650°C), and internally supported high-temp steel spring loading (ensuring rapid response and accurate reflection of internal vessel temperatures), suitable for catalytic bed layers. Flexible multi-point temperature measurement flexibly addresses cross-shaped and radial measurement requirements over large areas. Sensors extend along the vessel wall to designated points without outer protective tubes, allowing coiled transport. Optional secondary sealing chambers enable true representation of internal vessel conditions, detecting hot spots, channeling, and uneven distribution while responding rapidly to temperature changes. Wear-resistant RTDs/thermocouples offer various surface hardening processes for demanding applications: Carburizing (~HV900), Nitriding (~HV1200), Hard Chrome Plating and Chemical Ni-P (~HV1000), Boriding (HV1300~2300), PVD/PCVD TiN/TiCN (HV2000~3000), Tungsten Carbide WC+Co (HV1200~1800), and TD Coating VC (HV2800~3200), balancing wear resistance with rapid temperature response. Temperature transmitters convert temperature variables into standard output signals through voltage regulation, filtering, operational amplification, non-linear correction, V/I conversion, constant current, and reverse protection. JUMO transmitters are developed and manufactured at our German headquarters, offering combinations of analog, smart, HART protocol, explosion-proof, and various installation formats. They are widely used in petroleum, chemical, power, metallurgy, pharmaceutical, food, and shipping industries. **JUMO safetyM Safety Temperature Limiters/Monitors (Models 701155 STB/STW Ex and 701055 exTHERM-DR):** Designed for explosion-proof zones and safety monitoring.
