Measurement and Control Solutions for the Shipbuilding Industry
JUMO offers comprehensive measurement and control solutions for the shipbuilding industry, covering six key application areas: heating and cooling systems, engines, separators, oil and gas storage tanks, water and wastewater treatment, and ballast water management systems. **Heating and Cooling Systems** Heat exchangers are technical devices that transfer heat from one medium to another. Water is typically used as the medium, though other liquids or even solids may be employed. Their primary function is to maintain thermal balance during ventilation or refrigeration processes and to recycle heat between engines and exhaust gases. Some models mix two different liquids, while others feature partition grids to prevent mixing. Wall-mounted finned heat exchangers increase surface area for heat exchange while reducing flow resistance. Efficiency is optimized by maximizing the heat exchange surface and minimizing fluid flow resistance; JUMO temperature and pressure sensors monitor and control this process effectively. **Engines** Ship engines and compressors can generate extreme loads and temperatures during operation, requiring real-time monitoring of mechanical components to prevent damage. JUMO's reliable measurement technology ensures precise monitoring of temperature and pressure within these systems. Engine rooms in diesel-powered vessels house multiple engines with specific functions. The main propulsion engine drives the propeller to move the vessel through water, typically running on diesel, heavy fuel oil, or a combination of both. Propulsion systems also include multi-engine setups, propellers, and gearboxes. The robust JUMO VIBROtemp screwed-in RTD provides precise temperature readings for engines, lubricants, and control systems. Air or gas compression falls into two categories: positive displacement and dynamic compression. Positive displacement compressors include reciprocating (piston), scroll, and various rotary types (screw, rolling piston, vane). Temperature and pressure parameters are critical for compressor operation. The JUMO Pt100 temperature sensor ensures safe operation by detecting overheating or overcooling and signaling the control system if issues arise. The JUMO MIDAS pressure transmitter series is ideal for pressure control systems; its sensing element acts like a diaphragm, converting mechanical signals into 4~20mA or 0~5V electrical signals. **Separators** Separators are vital components of high-efficiency heavy fuel oil purification systems on ships. Untreated fuel is heated to an optimal temperature in the separator, causing impurities to settle. A centrifuge then extracts pure oil, while sludge and water accumulate at the periphery. At the clean oil outlet, a water sensor detects changes in water flow resistance and sends signals to the control unit. During discharge, the control unit opens drainage valves or directs water through outlets to flush out sediment based on sludge content. **Oil and Gas Storage Tanks** Natural gas can be liquefied at low temperatures and approximately 10 bar pressure. Due to these conditions, tank materials are made of special stainless steel and are isolated from the ship's hull. Spherical tanks are typically positioned mid-deck to facilitate transport. Since liquefaction depends heavily on internal pressure, real-time monitoring is essential. To measure pressure in extremely cold media, the medium must first be heated to its boiling point of approximately -40°C before reaching the pressure transmitter. The JUMO dTRANS p20 is designed to handle this demanding task. **Water and Wastewater Treatment** Freshwater is indispensable on board. Ships obtain it either through pre-storage or water treatment processes, sometimes extracting it from seawater. JUMO pH, conductivity, pressure, and level sensors support water treatment processes, ensuring consistent water quality. In seawater desalination plants, the core component is the Reverse Osmosis (RO) membrane. During RO, seawater is pushed under high pressure through a semi-permeable membrane that allows only specific ions and molecules to pass. Due to high salinity, pressures ranging from 60 bar to 80 bar are required. Monitoring pressure prior to the RO stage is critical for safety. The JUMO MIDAS C18 SW pressure transmitter is suitable for this application. Wastewater management varies by vessel size, involving either onboard storage followed by discharge via reception facilities at port, or direct processing using membranes or biological technologies. Both methods require level measurement equipment to prevent overflow. pH and conductivity sensors detect water quality before and after treatment. Throughout the water and wastewater process, JUMO devices perform all necessary tasks: measurement, control, recording, and display. The solution utilizes the JUMO digiLine intelligent bus system for digital sensors. This data bus connects water analysis digital sensors and includes connectors and display units. digiLine simplifies the creation of star and tree network topologies using a single shared signal line for communication with controllers or other devices. This approach enables simultaneous multi-parameter measurement at various locations and streamlines wiring. Connection Option 1: The multi-channel measurement device AQUIS touch series is specifically designed for water analysis. It serves as a platform for displaying and further processing measurement data. Up to 6 digital sensors can connect to the device module, and with interface and input modules, up to 25 sensors can be utilized. Additionally, four independent control loops can be executed. Measured values are recorded on paperless recorders with tamper-proof functionality. Connection Option 2: digiLine sensors can also connect to general-purpose measurement, control, and automation systems like the JUMO mTRON T, allowing integration into full automation schemes or independent operation. Compact PLCs typically integrate up to 62 digital sensors. The digiLine system measures multiple parameters including pH, temperature, oxidation-reduction potential, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and disinfectant levels. It is ideal for process applications in food, pharmaceutical, and water treatment industries. Features include secure digital transmission for process monitoring, modular design for independent measurement and network building, AQUIS touch transmitters supporting quick connections and touchscreen operation for easy replacement and calibration, continued converter availability even if a sensor fails, and convenient point management via PC or JUMO DSM software. **Ballast Water Management** After discharging wastewater or unloading cargo, yachts, large tankers, and bulk carriers often take on significant amounts of water for ballast, sourced from coastal waters. However, this ballast water is discharged at subsequent ports where cargo loading occurs. Ballast water contains animals, viruses, and microorganisms, including non-native invasive species that can disrupt aquatic ecosystems and cause economic losses. Ballast water discharge has been confirmed as a vector for invasive species in U.S. waters, leading to public health risks, environmental pollution, and economic damage to industries such as fisheries, agriculture, and tourism. JUMO provides reliable measurement assurance for ballast water treatment. Tank management can utilize JUMO level and temperature sensors for comprehensive control and monitoring, suitable for all vessel types and offshore installation. The JUMO MIDAS C18 SW pressure transmitter monitors levels on tankers, bulk carriers, passenger ships, supply vessels, and offshore drilling platforms. Control systems like the JUMO mTRON monitor independent parameters (level, pressure, temperature, flow) or trigger alarms. These systems control valves, pumps, actuators, motors, and other equipment. User interfaces can be customized for any application. JUMO also offers conductivity and residual chlorine sensors for measuring ballast water quality. **HVAC Systems** Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), also known as climate control systems, are fundamental to ship operations, ensuring indoor comfort. HVAC systems adjust temperature, humidity, and airflow to keep conditions within acceptable human limits. JUMO high-quality measurement equipment supports these applications. Heating is crucial for maintaining appropriate temperatures, especially in cold weather. Options include local heating and central heating, with the latter being more common due to cost-effectiveness. Heating systems generally consist of furnaces or boilers, heat pumps, and radiators. Ventilation manages air circulation to remove carbon dioxide and supply oxygen, ensuring breathable air. Stagnant air can spread diseases (via airborne pathogens) and trigger allergies, making continuous air circulation essential, particularly in ship attics. Poor ventilation increases humidity, promoting bacterial and fungal growth (e.g., mold). Air conditioning controls indoor temperature and ventilation equally important. It can be implemented via separate subsystems or centralized remote control. Regardless of the method, ventilation ducts must be regularly cleaned to prevent pathogen buildup from accumulated dirt. Recirculated air is also susceptible to contamination from chemicals, microorganisms, and radiation. **Services and Support** Our services cover manufacturing, documentation and training, product services, and maintenance and calibration. *Manufacturing Services:* We offer customized sensor technologies tailored to client needs, including RTDs, pressure transmitters, conductivity electrodes, pH, and redox electrodes.
